This summer I had the pleasure of attending an academic summer program Young Scholars Program - Frontiers of Science designed for students passionate about STEM to foster their interests in the vast realms of Physics, Chemistry, Neuroscience, Astrophysics and more. We were engaged in experimental workshops, inspiring speeches by renowned professors and interesting lectures by the faculty. I got to interact with the professors, learn about their research and discuss my interests with them which was thrilling.
I was especially enthralled by the lecture on cosmic explosions by the astrophysics professor there. I later approached him after the lecture to ask more about research opportunities and his research too. Another lecture I found interesting was how our neurons are capable of doing complex mathematics, it was a new mix of biology and maths and I found that very amusing. meeting new people and getting the chance to make new friends was a good experience. Being introverted and coming from a small town, I was astonished to see the things that people in bigger cities talk about and do. Despite being very different, I tried to push myself out of my comfort zone and approach a lot of more people than I usually would. I became fast friends with my roommate who was very sweet and introduced me to her friends as well. Living in a hostel for 5 days was also a new experience and a good one at that. I felt that this summer program was a glimpse into college life and I realized that college might not be as easy as I thought but hey! What’s life without a little challenge?
