Paper towns - John Green
I picked out this book from the bookshelves of a bookstore solely because of the author. I had read his ‘The Fault in our Stars’ and I loved it. However, this book is a different story. I cannot describe the plot of the book because you think it was one thing but it all falls apart at the end, so it is hard to put a finger on the book's purpose. Throughout the book, I was convinced that Quentin would eventually find Margo and bring her back home but that never happened and it was very bothersome especially when the entire book is about how Quentin is obsessed with Margo Roth Spielman and how he thinks that she chose him to be the person to find her. One of my and Quentin’s many dissimilarities is that I DO NOT like Margo. She thinks of herself as an important person and that she is the only one who is suffering from ‘living in a small town’. She chooses Quentin to help her out and give him the best night despite knowing how he felt. It’s as if she felt obligated to’ free’ Quentin from absolutely nothing. I did not like Quentin’s character as much either, he thinks that Margo choosing him to help her pull pranks means something and that he is now the chosen one to find her in her paper town. He also lacks self-awareness as we see him bad-mouthing his friend but never really looking at himself and realizing how big of a complainer he is. Some of the side plots were also in-coherent but I don't think that matters much because I could not see the whole plot to be coherent in itself either.
I was thoroughly disappointed with this book.
